Playing sports is certainly very good for everyone and, in particular, for teenagers, writes pazienti.it.
Based on these data, of course no one has ever thought to determine what is the proper limit of physical activity for boys.
The effect of sports on children
The U.S. Department of Health recommends that young people ages 6 to 17 have at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, equivalent to 7 hours a week. Today, a joint study, the result of the work of Swiss and Canadian researchers and recently published in the journal “Archives BMJ of Disease in Childhood”, offers different data not only for the recommended amount, but also, for the first time , setting boundaries that it would be better not to exceed.
According to this study, which included 1,245 Swiss adolescents between the ages of 16 and 20, the right amount of physical activity to get concrete benefits for health and psychophysical development should be 14 hours a week, but beware, exceed this limit as it can also have harmful effects. In other words, playing sports too intensely cancels out the benefits, rather than increasing them.
STUDY
Participants were asked various questions of anamnestic and personal nature, family and socio-economic nature, including sports and any injuries received during physical activity. Their level of well-being was assessed using the WHO-approved welfare index, which uses scores between 0 and 25 and considers point 13 as the first indicator of poor well-being. Of the participants, 50.4% were male with a mean age of 17.95 years. Nearly 9% of these men were overweight or obese.
The average overall well-being score for all participants was 17. In terms of sports practice, it was classified according to this table:
Low – 0 to 3.5 hours per week
Medium – from 3.6 to 10.5 hours per week
High – from 10.6 to 17.5 hours / week
Very high – over 17.5 hours / week
The optimal value, based on the analyzed data, is 14 hours per week.
