Protests in Kazakhstan are accompanied by bloodshed. Many demonstrators and members of the security forces are thought to have been killed in Almaty.
Riots in the Republic of Kazakhstan continue. In Almaty there were “strong exchanges of fire” in front of the municipality between armed groups and the army, the Russian state agency Tass reported. According to police spokesman Saltanat Asirbek, “extremist forces” tried to attack the administration buildings, as well as the headquarters and several police stations in Almaty.
A number of attackers have been “eliminated”, a police spokesman was quoted as saying by Interfax-Kazakhstan, TASS and Ria Novosti news agencies.
The exact condition is quite unclear
According to other reports, about 300 soldiers had come to the square in front of the municipality in armored vehicles, which had surrounded the square. Apparently operations are being carried out in various parts of Almaty against the demonstrators, who are also reported to be armed. Residents have been asked to stay in safe places and avoid the drum on the street.
There is currently no independent confirmation of events. Kazakh media websites are currently not accessible from outside. It is therefore not known what the exact bovine is.
According to official reports, 18 members of the security forces were killed during the protests in Almaty. But there is still no clear official information on the possible deaths of civilians.
State of emergency across the country
Unlike Almaty, videos from the capital Nur-Sultan (formerly Astana) show cars and buses on the streets, as well as a large number of security forces surrounding government buildings.
All flights have been canceled at the airport and a state of emergency has been declared throughout the country.
Lufthansa and many other airlines also interrupted flights to Almaty./DW
