The Russian Defense Ministry today published images of Russian troops being loaded on planes to go to Kazakhstan to help suppress the violent popular protest.
Dozens of people have been killed in the past three days in demonstrations against rising energy prices in the former Soviet republic.
Kazakh President Tokayev formally sought the help of the Moscow-led military alliance, which includes five other former Soviet republics.
Hours after Tokayev’s appeal, the alliance said the first military and paramilitary troops had been sent on their first missions since their inception in 1999.
“Peacekeepers have been sent to the Republic of Kazakhstan for some time, which will help stabilize and normalize the situation,” the statement said.
The group’s current chairman, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, said the alliance accepted the request as Kazakhstan faced “outside interference”.
The footage released by the defense ministry showed military planes loaded with troops and armored vehicles before taking off from snowy runways to Kazakhstan.
