Tokyo firefighters conduct training on occasions unfortunately, but it was also marked by startling traditional acrobatics at the special ceremony at Koto Ward that marked the start of the New Year, attracting endless curiosities.
About 2,500 firefighters took part in the event, organized by the Japanese capital’s Fire Department, where 140 trucks were mobilized to put out an imaginary fire while there was also a rescue mission to evacuate a building allegedly hit by a powerful earthquake. The climax of the maneuvers, however, was brought about by the acrobatic scale, echo, and tradition dating back to Edo, between the 17th and 19th centuries.
Firefighters also took part in a drill against toxic agents, while a massive fire was re-enacted in a building where a helicopter was used to evacuate people. The drill was held after the giant fire that broke out in Tokyo’s Kabukicho district in September, killing 44 people, the largest number of fire victims since the establishment of the Tokyo Fire Department in 1948.
