The peak death toll from Covid 19 in Italy could be as high as mid-February, according to a study by l’Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, Ihme, an independent health research center at the University of Washington, whose projections vary depending on of several factors: the use of masks, the severity of the situation by Omicron, the third dose and the reluctance to immunize.
In the scenario, when for example 80% of the population uses masks, the model predicts 390 deaths within 11 February. The worst situation is related to the spread of Omicron: if it continues at a rapid pace, projections predict that by February 17, the quota of 580 daily deaths will be reached.
After an urgent meeting that lasted two hours, the Council of Ministers decided to approve at the last minute a new anti-Covid decree aimed at curbing the pandemic.
Compulsory vaccination for people over 50 is part of these measures. Government sources explained that such a decision was “not a political compromise”, but say that this age group is exactly what is filling the intensive care units and Covid wards.
