Following the declaration of a state of emergency due to the unrest in the country, Kazakhstan seeks assistance from the Russian-led CSTO.
Peacekeepers from a Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) troop body made up of allied countries of the former Soviet Union will travel to Kazakhstan to help stabilize the country after mass protests. This was stated by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Thursday (06.01).
Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Yomart Tokayev had earlier called for help from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), a military alliance between Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
US and UN call for content
The White House and the United Nations have urged Kazakh authorities to show restraint in dealing with violent civil unrest after the country’s government declared a state of emergency following the protests.
The United States has denied the allegations in a statement issued Friday stating “Similar, baseless allegations concerning Russia’s intelligence have been made more than once.
Extraordinary situation
Kazakhstan has been rocked since the beginning of the year by protests, which escalated on Wednesday into clashes with police. Local authorities cut off internet and mobile phone connections across the country and initially declared a state of emergency at rally epicenters.
The state of emergency then spread across the country as protests over rising fuel prices escalated into clashes and demonstrators attacked government buildings.
