The French parliament today suspended a debate on toughening the Covid-19 restrictions law after opposition lawmakers demanded explanations for the language used by President Emmanuel Macron, who said he wanted to “infuriate” unvaccinated people.
Macron had made his malicious comments in an interview with the daily Le Parisien where he also said he wanted to “make life so difficult for unvaccinated people” that they would be forced to get the vaccine.
His interview was published shortly before the resumption of the debate on making vaccination mandatory only as proof of obtaining Covid-19 certification to enter restaurants, cinemas or public transport.
But the session was quickly interrupted by discussions of the president’s extreme comments.
“A president can not say such things,” said MP Christian Jacob, leader of the conservative opposition ‘Les Republicans’. “Even if I am in favor of the vaccine, I can not support a text whose aim is to ‘infuriate’ the French.”
“Is this your goal, yes or no?” “We can not debate without a correct answer to this.”
Another opposition lawmaker echoed Jacob’s comments, urging Prime Minister Jean Castex to comment.
Presidential elections in France are expected in April and Macron had to reckon that his hostile comments about the unvaccinated would not be ignored by voters.
