The United States set a world record with nearly 1 million coronavirus infections reported on Monday, the Reuters news agency reported. The figure is almost double that reached a week ago while the Omicron variant, highly contagious, shows no signs of slowing down.
The number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 has risen nearly 50% in the past week and now exceeds the figure of 100,000 individuals, according to an analysis by the Reuters news agency, the first time this threshold has been reached since the winter of a year before.
Overall, the United States has recorded a daily average of 486,000 cases over the past week, a rate that has doubled in seven days and surpasses any other country. The 978,856 new infections reported Monday include several cases from Saturday and Sunday when many states do not provide notifications.
The average number of daily deaths in the United States from COVID-19 has remained fairly stable throughout December and early January at around 1,300, according to a Reuters news agency report. The Omicron variant appears to be transmitted much more easily than previous virus mutations. According to estimates, the variant accounted for 95.4% of coronavirus cases identified in the United States as of Jan. 1, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Tuesday. The World Health Organization said on Tuesday that the evidence so far suggests that the Omicron variant is causing milder consequences./VOA
