The second boost or fourth dose of COVID-19 vaccine, according to a study in Israel, could increase the number of antibodies against the Omicron variant.
The findings of the study were presented on Tuesday (January 4th) by Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett during a visit to a hospital near Tel Aviv.
“The fourth dose of the vaccine is safe,” said Bennett, adding that the news that the dose of the vaccine increases antibodies and increases protection against infection and hospitalization can be avoided.
People with weaker immunity and the elderly have started taking the fourth dose as of Friday (December 31, 2021).
On the first Monday of January 2022, Israel became the first country in the world to offer the fourth dose of coronavirus vaccine to people over 60 and health workers.
About 20,000 Israelis have already received the fourth dose, while about 100,000 had made appointments to be vaccinated in the coming weeks, Prime Minister Bennett said.
Israel has been hit by the fourth wave of coronavirus infections and in recent days new cases of COVID-19 have increased.
On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health announced that 10,720 new cases have been registered in the last 24 hours.
Israel was the first country to offer the third dose of the vaccine to the general population, a decision that has been followed by the United States and several countries in Europe.
