Nearly 300,000 new cases of Covid-19 have been reported in France in the last 24 hours, Health Minister Olivier Veran announced today, as the Omicron variant spreads across the country.
The last record was at the end of December, with just over 230,000 new cases in one day.
These figures show the extent of the current wave of the epidemic. This has continued since the fall and was revived in late 2021 with the advent of the Omicron variant.
The impact on hospitals has already been felt, with more than 2,000 admissions within a day, according to data published yesterday by Santé publique France.
The increase in registered cases is partly explained by an unprecedented number of PCR tests: eight million last week, according to Veran.
However, the epidemiological outbreak is real, as evidenced by the launch of the “positivity rate”. It has passed 15%, close to the record levels of autumn 2020.
