World number one Novak Djokovic will play to defend his Australian Open title this month after receiving a medical exemption for the Covid-19 vaccine.
Djokovic, a nine-time winner of the Australian Open, has previously said he would not take part in the prestigious championship if vaccination is a condition.
All tennis players and tournament staff must be vaccinated to participate, unless exempted by an “independent panel of experts”.
The tour will start in Melbourne on January 17th.
“I had a great time with my people during the holidays and now I am leaving for Australia with the exemption permit I received,” the 34-year-old wrote on Instagram yesterday.
“I am ready to live with tennis in the weeks of competition.
Earlier in the week, Australian Open organizers Craig Tiley said some unvaccinated athletes had been given leave of absence for this year’s championship.
According to the BBC, exemptions are believed to be granted to people with inflammatory heart disease or other dangerous conditions.
It has not been made public what was the reason for Djokovic receiving the permit.
Earlier Djokovic was withdrawn from the Serbian tennis team for the ATP Cup tournament in Sydney, which raised suspicions about his participation in the Melbourne tournament.
