The huge European Union flag, which was hoisted at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris to mark the start of the bloc’s French presidency, was removed following protests by leaders of far-right and center-right parties.
European Affairs Minister Clement Beaune, who said at the end of the week that the flag would stay for several days, said today that it had been removed as planned.
“The flag is expected to be removed today, we have not set the exact deadline“, Stressed Bonn, according to France24.
He rejected the idea that the administration surrendered after National Alliance party leader Marine Le Pen announced an appeal to the Council of State with a request to remove the EU flag.
Bonn pointed out that Le Pen and other party leaders misunderstood him when they said that the EU flag replaced the French tricolor.
Marine Le Pen declared today that the administration was forced to remove the EU flag from the Arc de Triomphe and that it was a wonderful, patriotic victory in early 2022.
Presidential elections in France are held in April and according to the latest results of the poll, Marine Le Pen will be the main opponent of the current president, Emmanuel Macron.
