The new year entered with a giant flame in the skies of Cape Town, South Africa where a massive fire engulfed the local parliament building.
Firefighters found the battle with flames difficult, which they could not control except after a few hours, while the plume of smoke could be seen several kilometers away.
The Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Patricia De Lille, told reporters that the fire had caused damage to the House of National Parliament, but so far there have been no reports of injuries.
It is learned that the fire started in an office inside the building, but its cause is still unknown. The incident happened just hours after the state funeral for Archbishop Desmond Tutu was held at St George Cathedral, very close to parliament.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner was recognized worldwide for his anti-apartheid activism and as a strong defender of human rights.
Local officials say part of the parliament’s roof collapsed due to the flames, while according to them the alarm did not fall at the time of the fire, which made firefighters not notified in time.
