The state funeral ceremony for Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a racial justice lawyer, is being held in South Africa.
“When we were in darkness, he brought us light,” said Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury.
At Tutus’s request, the funeral will be simple.
Tutu, who died on December 26 at the age of 90, was remembered in South Africa and around the world for his moral correctness and principled attitudes.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver an eulogy.
Tutu had won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his nonviolent opposition to leadership in South Africa by the minority against the majority.
After the end of apartheid, he chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and became a model for other countries that were making similar efforts.
The commission was “a space where victims could share their traumas and share their story with the whole nation,” Tutu wrote in the commission’s final report. This commission was created “to serve as a room for national healing, reconciliation and forgiveness.”
