While the Omicron variant of the coronavirus has already become dominant throughout the country, Greek authorities have again reported an outbreak of daily infections with 35,580 cases in the last 24 hours, of which nearly 16,000 in the prefecture of Athens, 4,000 in Thessaloniki, about 2,000 in Thessaly and 1,500 in Crete.
It is the third record in a row with infections which have quadrupled since the beginning of this week and specialists warn that this trend will continue in the coming days, while the average age of those infected is only 37 years old.
Also 72 deaths were recorded, in total 20,708 since the beginning of the pandemic, while 636 are intubated, of which 85% are unvaccinated. The Greeks, for their part, have been waiting with various reactions for the additional measures taken by the government, which started on Thursday morning.
“As you understand, when we reduce working hours, then we also reduce salaries. A café supports families, supports people and we as owners must seek patience from our staff until normalcy is restored. “But as you can see, patience does not pay the rent to people and does not keep families alive,” said a cafe owner.
Only on New Year’s Eve the bars will be closed at 2 am and on other days bars, nightclubs and restaurants will be closed at midnight, with no customers on foot and no music. Also the unvaccinated will not be allowed to go even outside the restaurants and bars.
According to doctors in Greece the healing time of cases with Omikron is shorter and most cases are with mild symptoms like that of a common flu. But as they point out, the greatest risk is posed by the unvaccinated over 60 years old, who in Greece are over 380,000 people.
Meanwhile, the fourth suicide in Greece of a coronavirus patient who ended his life by jumping from the third floor has been registered at the Papanikolaou Hospital in Thessaloniki.
