The Italian government announced on Wednesday that it plans to relax isolation measures for people who have had contact with those infected with the coronavirus.
The isolation measure will no longer be required for persons who have received the booster dose, have been vaccinated with both doses, or have recovered from COVID-19 disease less than 120 days ago. They will need to submit a negative test five days after having had contact with any infected.
Meanwhile, for people who have not been vaccinated, if they have contact with an infected person, they will be forced to go into isolation for ten days.
“I think it is reasonable to apply different rules to citizens who have followed the instructions of the Government, taking the two doses and then the boosting dose,” said Undersecretary of Health Andrea Costa.
The government said the new measures would enter into force after consultations with the special commissioner for COVID-19.
During this week, Italy recorded an increase in daily cases and on Wednesday recorded 98,030 cases, a record number of infections. The number of hospitalized patients has also increased.
The government has tightened measures during the holiday season, banning concerts and other entertainment events and closing discos until January 31st. Also, in Italy, wearing the mask outdoors has already become mandatory.
The Italian government has also imposed restrictions on travelers, including those within the European Union. All citizens must undergo a coronavirus test before traveling.
In Italy, almost 80 percent of the population has been vaccinated with two doses of the vaccine and about 30 percent have received the booster dose of the coronavirus vaccine.
