Germany plans to donate 75 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to low- and middle-income countries next year, the country’s Development Minister Svenja Schulze said today.
Speaking to local media, Schulze said Germany made a significant contribution to the UN COVAX vaccine platform this year, without undermining its vaccination campaign.
“But we can not stop there. “Next year, we plan to donate at least 75 million doses of vaccine,” she told Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND).
The World Health Organization (WHO) has consistently called on rich countries to donate more COVID-19 vaccines to the COVAX platform to ensure that lower-income countries do not lag behind in the global fight against coronavirus.
Germany has contracted or guaranteed over 100 million doses for COVAX this year, but so far less than half of them have reached their destinations, due to operational and logistical problems.
The German Foreign Ministry said about 53 million doses are currently being distributed or prepared for shipment.
