According to World Health Organization estimates, 558 out of 100,000 people die each year in BiH from the direct consequences of air pollution, while Sarajevo is often at the top of the list of the most polluted cities in the world.
The Air Pollution Management Survey in Bosnia and Herzegovina, conducted in October 2019, says that in BiH, about 3,300 people die prematurely each year as a result of exposure to PM2.5 air pollution. About 16 per cent of this burden falls on Sarajevo and Banja Luka.
As the Sarajevo Klix portal reports, citizens of BiH, but also of countries in the region, inhale more toxic particles than those of other countries, due to the widespread use of solid fuels for heating and cooking, and still has a large number of coal and lignite power plants.
They add that seven of the ten most polluting power plants in Europe are located in this area. Numerous experts, but also foreign organizations, constantly warn that the fight against air pollution is of key importance and requires urgent action.
