The Nicaraguan government has seized the former Taiwanese embassy and diplomatic offices, saying they belong to China.
The government of President Daniel Ortega has severed ties with Taiwan this month saying it recognizes only mainland China’s government.
Prior to their departure, Taiwanese diplomats attempted to donate their holdings to the Catholic Diocese of Managua.
But the Ortega government said yesterday that such donations could not be made as the building and its holdings in the expensive area of the capital Managua, all belong to China.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry condemned what it called “illegal actions by the Ortega regime,” adding that the government had violated standard procedures by giving Taiwanese diplomats only two weeks to leave the country.
The ministry added that Taiwan “condemned the Nicaraguan government’s arbitrary ban on the symbolic sale of its properties to the Nicaraguan Catholic Church.”
Earlier this month, the Central American country said it officially recognized only autonomous China and Taiwan as part of it.
“There is only one China,” the Latin government said in a statement. “The People’s Republic of China is the legitimate government that represents all of China and Taiwan as an integral part of its territory.”
Recent moves add to Taiwan’s isolation on the international stage as the island nation has increased ties with Lithuania and Slovakia, which also do not recognize Taiwan as a state.
Taiwan now has only 14 formal diplomatic allies left./ Newsmax /
