The Russian Defense Ministry today published images of maneuvers in Voronezh near the western border, calling it a “demonstration of the modern fighting of military personnel.”
Russian officials said 10,000 troops were taking part in a month-long monarchy near Ukraine amid accusations by the West that Moscow seeks to attack its former Soviet neighbor.
They added that the troops were returning to their permanent bases while separate units would be on standby for the New Year holidays. The West accuses Russia of accumulating more than 100,000 troops near Ukraine for a possible winter offensive, but Moscow calls the claims ‘nonsense’.
Russia has meanwhile made some security demands to the West, saying NATO should not add new members to Eastern Europe, especially the former Soviet republic.
