Trafficker networks in Turkey continue to send to death dozens of migrants and refugees trying to cross into Europe.
Last night’s tragedy in Paros, where 16 people lost their lives on a speedboat bound for Italy, was the third in a few days. The 11 dead in Antikythera had preceded the day before and the three dead in Folegandros.
The new incident sparked the anger of Transport and Island Policy Minister Giannis Plakiotakis, who in a statement said the boats did not even meet basic safety standards.
“The Coast Guard, with the help of the Air Force, Navy and individuals, has rescued more than 160 citizens in the last three days. I express my deepest sorrow for the loss of lives, victims of ruthless murderers who have been left to act uncontrollably in Turkey. Greece will continue to save lives that others are endangering in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean. In 2021 in total, more than 1,450 search-and-rescue operations were conducted and more than 29,000 people were rescued.
The punishment of traffickers, but also of those who allow or facilitate their action, is imperative and self-evident and in this regard we expect additional mobilization of the international community.
The shipwreck occurred when the ship with 88 migrants and refugees capsized. Some of them managed to notify the Authorities via 112. Immediately in the sea area were launched an offshore ship and five Navy patrol boats, a Navy helicopter, an Air Force C-130 aircraft, nine floating vessels in the area and leaders of the Underwater Missions Unit. Port and armed forces officers pulled out 16 bodies, while 63 people were rescued. The search for the nine missing persons continued Saturday morning.
The 63 survivors were temporarily transferred to an accommodation facility in Paros.
