A strong wave of the most contagious variant of the coronavirus, Omicron, is expected in Germany at the end of the year, warned German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, despite the drop in the seven-day nationwide incidence rate.
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported that the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week on Thursday was 280.3. The number of cases on Wednesday was 289.0 and a week ago it was 340.1.
“We do not have a big and fast wave yet. That will change at the end of the year and in the first week of January, “Lauterbach told WDR. “In some European countries, such as the United Kingdom, the Omicron variant is already widespread,” he said.
The 58-year-old, in this role as part of the new German coalition government, also said more specific doses against Omicron were needed next year after the third boost vaccine. “Personally, I would assume that a fourth vaccination would be needed,” he said, adding that this has not yet been scientifically proven.
“What we know for sure is that we need booster vaccines” as they can prevent “70 to 80 percent of symptomatic cases of the disease,” said the minister.
