U.S. President Joe Biden has signed a law banning imports from China’s Xinjiang province amid concerns about forced labor in the region, the White House said.
The bill was passed by Congress on December 16 as part of Washington’s response to Beijing’s treatment of China’s Uighur Muslim minority.
Congress voted in favor of the proposal after lawmakers reached a compromise agreement, eliminating the differences between the bills introduced in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
By law, all goods produced in Xinjiang – where the Chinese government has set up a network of detention camps for Uighurs and other Muslim minorities – are the product of forced labor.
China denies human rights abuses in Xinjiang, a province that supplies many of its photovoltaic materials worldwide, but the US government and many organizations have blamed Beijing for genocide in the region.
