Two new British studies show that the Omicron variant of the coronavirus can indeed cause milder disease than the Delta variant.
According to them, people affected by Omicron are 50 to 60% less likely to be hospitalized compared to patients from Delta.
The risk of hospitalization is already similar in both cases for people who have received two doses of the vaccine, experts say.
The scientists warned, however, against interpreting these early studies – which have not yet been reviewed by other specialists – as a sign that the wave of infections caused by Omicroni could be lighter and warn against over-optimism.
They insist that the fact that Omicroni spreads faster than Delta and has the ability to circumvent the protection offered by coronavirus vaccines should also be taken into account.
Research in Scotland suggests that the risk of hospitalizations from Omicroni was two-thirds lower compared to the Delta variant.
But, the study pointed out that cases with Omicron in Scotland are mostly among the young population, who are less likely to get seriously ill from COVID-19.
