The Russian president said today that the “coup” that changed power in Ukraine forced Moscow to act in Crimea.
He added that before the Maidan movement in Kiev in 2014, Moscow was happy to cooperate with Ukrainian governments and had no plans to intervene in Crimea.
But that changed when the democratically elected government was overthrown, the Russian leader said today at a year-end press conference in Moscow.
He added that the change of power there was one “Bloody coup,” where people “They were killed and burned.”
The current tensions between Russia and Ukraine began after the events of 2014 when the ‘Maidan’ protest movement brought down the government there. Shortly afterwards Crimea was absorbed into Russia after a referendum held on the peninsula, which God considers illegal.
“We could not say no to people in Sevastopol and Crimea. “We were in a situation where we had no choice.”
He added that those living in Crimea or eastern Ukraine had not been given the choice of which country they wanted to be part of, and that most residents wanted to be Russian.
