The Omicron variant of the coronavirus has provoked a sixth wave of infections in Spain. Even football is not isolated from this new reality and for this reason the La Liga Delegates Commission has adopted a protocol in an attempt to stop the spread of infections, as a large number of players are infected.
One of the first measures set is daily testing for every member of sports clubs. Results should be reported statistically. On match days, host teams are required to take the test during the day or at the start of training. While the other team will be required to be tested before the trip. In addition, a PCR test should be performed at least the first 15 days of January 2022, but also a serological check. La Liga will manage and pay the costs of these tests.
As an extraordinary measure La Liga decided that players would be required to undergo a PCR test at the beginning of the first training session after returning from the Christmas holidays, which they would be required to repeat.
Regardless of whether they come out negative, players are allowed individual training, but not the use of locker rooms or other enclosed spaces. Once the PCR test results come out, the clubs can train in groups and use the locker rooms, keeping in mind the rules set.
The new La Liga protocol also sets out new guidelines for players’ daily behavior, travel and use of different team facilities. During the meal there should be four people and always the same at a table, in order to identify if someone will come out positive.
La Liga has included in its protocol the instructions of the health authorities for the use of the mask, but this rule does not apply to the players who will be trained. The use of the FFP2 mask will be mandatory for all players who will be sitting on the bench. The mask will not wear only the first coach.
Social isolation with the rest of the staff and continuous ventilation of the team premises, at least once a day and the use of disinfectants is recommended, but also immediate notification of medical services in case of symptoms similar to Covid-19.
The good news is that it has not yet been decided whether the championship will stop.
