The Assembly of Northern Macedonia on Thursday approved the resignation of Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, which was met with applause from the opposition VMRO DPMNE.
The resignation of the head of the Government was ascertained without debate in the session of the Assembly, as this was requested by Zaev in the written justification of his resignation.
Zaev announced his resignation from the Government on October 31, after the deep defeat of the Social Democratic League (SDSM) in the local elections.
He has claimed responsibility for the defeat by VMRO DPMNE, resigning from the leadership of the party.
“I want to set an example to recognize virtuous decisions when necessary and to make another contribution to strengthening the democratic capacity of the people, but also future leaders to be aware of their civic duty when caring for the country. “, wrote Zaev in the justification of the resignation act.
Following the resignation, the Speaker of the Assembly, Talat Xhaferi, announced the President, Stevo Pendarovski, who within ten days must appoint the new Prime Minister-designate of Northern Macedonia.
He will be Dimitar Kovacevski, chairman of the Social Democratic League, having previously announced that he has a parliamentary majority in the Assembly.
Part of the new Government, in addition to SDSM and the Democratic Union for Integration, will be the party Alternativa, which replaces the Besa Movement, which left the Government after the local elections.
The new parliamentary majority has 64 deputies out of a total of 120 in the Assembly of Northern Macedonia.
The mandator, according to the constitution, within 20 days must submit for approval to the Assembly the new government composition, which is voted with 61 votes of deputies.
The new government, based on constitutional deadlines, must be elected by mid-January 2022 at the latest./ REL
