According to foreign trade figures, the Western Balkan countries cooperate more with the markets of Europe, China or Turkey, but very little with each other’s markets.
The leaders have taken a new Open Balkan initiative, which they say will accelerate the Berlin process to create a common regional market and more competitive in the global economy.
The president of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Commerce, Marko Cadez, agrees. He says that the Open Balkan initiative is driven by businesses and the real problems of the people in the region.
“Since we started the cooperation between Albania and Serbia 8 years ago in Nis, the volume of trade was almost zero, and now it has doubled. Last year alone we had a 27% increase in total trade volume. It is also interesting that the growth of Albanian exports to Serbia every year is 30% higher, a significant percentage. This cooperation can be expanded. To give you an example, you need workers during the summer season, as we really like the vegetables you export and would love more of them.
Open Balkan comes as an impetus from businesses and not politics. CEFTA was a good deal for the early 2000s, but that mechanism is no longer working, it is very slow. So we needed a new impetus and real steps. ”
Although Open Balkan is open to all six countries, only three of them have joined the initiative, with Kosovo categorically refusing without mutual recognition of Serbia. Cedaz says the trade will overcome political problems
