The European Commission announced on 21 December that it recognizes coronavirus vaccination certificates issued by the Montenegrin authorities.
The Commission confirmed that the COVID-19 certificates issued by Montenegro are “equivalent to the digital COVID-19 certificates issued by the European Union”, the EU institution said in a statement.
In addition to Montenegro, the EU has decided to recognize the certificates of Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay. According to the announcement, this EC decision will enter into force on December 22.
“This decision follows the technical assessment carried out by the EU services for the certificates issued by these five countries and territories, documents which will be incorporated in the EU system. “The European bloc will treat the certificates of these countries as it does with the certificates for COVID-19 of the EU”, said the European Commission.
This decision means that any person holding a certificate issued by Montenegro can use it under the same conditions as a person holding an EU digital certificate for COVID-19.
From other countries in the Western Balkans region, Serbia, Northern Macedonia and Albania have already received confirmation of recognition of their certificates.
Kosovo and Bosnia and Herzegovina are the only countries in the region whose certificates are not yet recognized by the EU.
The Ministry of Health in Kosovo has said that the non-recognition of coronavirus vaccination certificates by the European bloc is more of a technical problem.
“We are at the stage when the QR code should be made readable offline [pa qenë të lidhur në internet]. It is currently only readable online. The issue has to do with the technical aspect “, Dafina Gexha, Deputy Minister of Health, said earlier for Radio Free Europe.
The so-called QR code, when scanned, provides information on the type of vaccine received, the number of doses and the place of vaccination.
The EU is also expected that from 10 January 2022 it will not allow travel for citizens who have not received three doses of the coronavirus vaccine.
