Silvia was written in the last period of Gerard de Nerval’s life, and was among the adored books of Proust, Gracq and Eco. The novel tells the story of the character’s love for three women (Silvia, Adriana and Aurelia), whom he wants all three without being able to choose, so he finally manages to lose them.
The story begins when a newspaper paragraph immerses in the memories of the youth the character and at the same time the narrator of the story. The perspective seems to shift backwards, through the past and the present, so the reader can never be clear whether the character’s voice is an event of the past or of the present event that is happening.
The main character, the narrator with the status of a nobleman, who has recently decided to live for a while on an inherited property, decides to leave Paris for a debauched theatrical and drinking life. Suddenly returns to the love of youth, a peasant girl named Silvia, who has a classic style style with beautiful brown hair. She wears gloves to live while fate connects her with a man equal to her layer. The character of the novel also loves a seductive actress in Paris, Aurelian, who is surrounded by beautiful boys who give her empty love romances, but no one loves her, for what she really is, including our own character.
For her, Aurelia is a beautiful illusion that fades in the light of reality. Aidashuron and Adriana, of noble origin, a tall blonde with yellow hair. A perfect girl but lives in a monastery. She quickly escapes from this world from a premature disease. In the end it seems that the narrator is a complex character; he loves all three women but wins none. Apparently for no reason beyond its creation. They just came and went.
“Silvia” is described as an anthem for unattainable love and is described by a clear and lyrical style. This novel is the most worthy forerunner of modern European literature. ‘Masterpiece within the masterpiece’ have considered this novel which is part of the collection ‘Girls of Fire’. In the form of a narrative condensed in the first person, Nerval speaks of the futile search for that simple happiness that the main character had felt for the first and last time in his childhood.
Between this story and the past are very beautifully intertwined with the present, the dream with the real, the memory with the story. The novel has been praised by critics for its clear and very lyrical style.
Umberto Eco praises it this way: “One of the most beautiful novels ever written. Reading Silva leaves me confused. I later learned that the same thing had happened to Proust ‘- Umberto Eco
