Tirana officially takes over the relay as the European Youth Capital for 2022.
In the arena electrified by music and young people, the Mayor of Klaipeda in Latvia, Vytautas Grubliauskas, symbolically handed over to Mayor Erion Veliaj the key that symbolizes taking office. “It is a very special moment to hand over the key today to the mayor of Tirana. We must support the mayor of Tirana. Albania and Tirana are places we will be proud of and we will say: -Yes, we were the capital of the youth before this wonderful capital. “Now this symbol of faith is in your hands,” said Grubliauskas.
As the European Youth Capital 2022, Tirana will have an ambitious program that will aim to address the needs of all its young people and try to connect the city and its youth with European values.
Mayor Erion Veliaj described this moment as a fantastic opportunity for Tirana. “We have officially taken the baton from Klaipeda, Lithuania, which was the European Capital of Youth for 2021. So we will use all the last days of December to plan a calendar that has so far gone to 1000 activities for the whole next year. 1000 activities where we want young people to connect with each other in many fields, from sports, art, culture, youth entrepreneurship, environmental activists. “It is a fantastic day and an extraordinary opportunity for Tirana, even as a postcard of what modern Albania is today and what we can become tomorrow,” he said.
The mayor stressed that during 2022, not only young people from Tirana will be supported and promoted, but also those from other Albanian-speaking areas. “We also want to use this fantastic opportunity to promote Albanian youth beyond Tirana, Albanian youth everywhere in Albania, Albanian youth everywhere in Kosovo, in the Presevo Valley, in Western Macedonia, in the south of Montenegro, because we see it as a platform where we can show our skills “, declared the mayor Veliaj.
The Municipality of Tirana has opened the calls for all those who have an idea for activities to become part of the fantastic calendar. “We will have some activities that will be massive in all the big squares and terrains of Tirana. Of course we will also have some things that are smaller at the school, neighborhood, community level. For these ideas we have just opened a call. It is a call for all youth organizations, universities, for all youth organizations, whether cultural or sports to apply, to be able to support them financially to realize all the dreams and all the passions and ideas they have in the year 2022 “, underlined Veliaj.
The title “Tirana European Youth Capital 2022” was awarded to the youth of Albania, in 2019 in Aimens, France, as an effort successfully finalized by civil society organizations, under the leadership of the National Youth Congress and with the support of the Municipality of Tirana .
