The new variant of the coronavirus, Omicron, is spreading “with lightning speed” in Europe and will probably become the dominant variant in France early next year, warned the French Prime Minister, Jean Castex.
He made the remarks on December 17, hours before France imposed harsh travel restrictions on passengers coming from the UK.
The UK is by far the worst hit country and on 17 December recorded almost 15,000 cases with the Omicron variant.
Across Europe, health officials are preparing for a new wave of infections.
Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands have also announced they will tighten measures because of Omicron.
According to European Union data, Europe has already registered over 89 million cases of coronavirus and 1.5 million deaths.
France closed its borders to UK travelers, both for business and tourism.
Speaking just hours before the measure went into effect, French Prime Minister Castex said the travel restrictions were part of a series of measures aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus.
France aims to require a third dose of the vaccine, so that citizens can go to restaurants and also physical distance will be a condition to use public transport.
Castex also said that the French Government will announce new measures next year aimed at combating reluctance to get vaccines. According to him, it is “unacceptable that several million French people refuse to be vaccinated and endanger the lives of all citizens.”
