Five children have died and three are fighting for their lives as the air castle where they were playing was raised about 10 meters high by a deadly wind near their school.
The serious tragedy happened today at Hillcrest Primary School on the Australian island of Tasmania.
The school was holding the last celebrations of the year before the Christmas holidays.
The children who tragically lost their lives were two sixth-grade boys and two girls, ages 10 to 11, said Police Commissioner Darren Hine.
Four children are in hospital including three in serious condition.
Police said they are investigating the accident.
The slingshot castle was torn to pieces after it had fallen to the ground near the school.
Police were seen comforting school staff and each other amid heavy scenes as ambulance crews tried to provide first aid to the victims.
Police said: “On a day like this when children have to celebrate the last day of school, we are here mourning their loss. “Our hearts are with those of their families and loved ones, with the emergency services that tried to save lives.”
A student who saw the horrific scenes before his eyes, said he could have been among them too.
He told The Mercury: “Then it was my turn. “Fifth and sixth graders had to go forward.”
The Prime Minister of Australia, Scott Morrison, said that the deaths of children were “devastating”.
