A giant yacht worth more than $ 500 million believed to be owned by Russian oligarch Igor Sechin has recently been seized by Spanish authorities.
The 150-meter-long vessel ‘Crescent’ has been confiscated amid a campaign of Western sanctions against wealthy friends of the Russian president.
The yacht had been anchored in the Spanish port of Tarragona, Catalonia since November 2, before being seized by officials, the Spanish transport ministry said.
It is believed to be owned by Sechin, a close ally of Putin, appointed to the helm of energy giant Rosneft by the Russian leader.
The 61-year-old billionaire is one of several well-known figures among Russian oligarchs who have been penalized with harsh sanctions in the West since February.
Former Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is described as one of “Putin’s most trusted advisers and personal friends”, according to the sanctions list.
The Spanish state will already be taking care of the luxury yacht boasting a mobile helicopter hangar and a glass-bottomed swimming pool.
Spanish police told Reuters they believe the yacht belongs to the Russian oil tycoon, but this will be confirmed more precisely by investigations.
A Tarragona Marina port spokesman said the yacht ‘Crescent’ was registered with a non-Russian company.
The development comes as another Sechin super-yacht was seized by French authorities in early March.
French authorities said they seized the luxury vehicle “Amore Vero” in the port of La Ciotat under the instructions of massive European sanctions.
Even Russia’s richest man, Alexei Mordashov, saw his 60 million yacht seized by officials in Italy.
