The director of the Tufina cemetery, Eliodor Ndini, was arrested by the police this Wednesday, accused of corruption and abuse of office, after the operation conducted by the Local Police Directorate and the Economic Crime section.
The operation is being carried out on the basis of a proceeding initiated by the Economic Crime section of the Tirana Police, for the Cemetery Directorate in Tufina.
According to the information, the director of the cemetery has been arrested so far, two are being sought, while two others are being investigated at large.
The director in cooperation with others asked the citizens from 50 to 200 thousand new lek for a place in the cemetery.
According to information, eight are detained, while the operation is still ongoing. The investigation was carried out with special methods, while the cases were documented and abuses of tenders in other fields were also discovered.
It is not the first time this scandal has been discovered in our country, where death is traded.
In 2021, the investigative show on Top Channel, Fiks Fare, denounced the scandal in voice and image in the Tufina cemetery in Tirana, bringing facts about how the employees collaborated, who had surrounded places, camouflaging them as graves, but which were actually empty and given to those who paid.
A video from a citizen arrived at Fiks Fare’s address, which showed dozens of surrounded graves, even with names on them, but which were empty. These places were sold by the employees of the cemetery manager, disguising them as real graves.
After this information, Fiks journalists contacted an employee of the Tufina cemetery, who indicated that there are places in the cemetery surrounded by concrete as graves, which are empty, but were bought by various citizens against a bribe.
Even Fix’s associate was removed as if he wanted a place for a grave. The cemetery employee undertakes to find the place, but for this he had to pay 350 thousand old lek. 300,000 lek was for the place and 50,000 lek for placing a concrete frame to give it the shape of a grave. According to the employee, he didn’t want the money only for himself, but for his bosses. To make the grave even more believable, a fictitious name would be placed on top of it.
