More than 100 inmates have escaped after riots at an overcrowded prison in Ecuador, where at least 43 people have lost their lives, according to officials.
A total of 108 people were missing even after the retrieval of 112 escaped prisoners at the Bellavista prison in Santo Domingo, said local police chief Fausto Salinas.
The riots began Monday afternoon in the Ecuadorian city jail, in the latest episode of violence that is rocking the South American country.
Authorities said the riots erupted after a court order transferred a gang member to Santo Domingo jail, which may have caused panic among other inmates.
Venice authorities said 43 people had died, most of whom had been stabbed.
The riots were the latest incident of violence in Ecuadorian prisons that the government says are linked to the fight between territorial trafficking gangs and trafficking routes.
Last year 316 prisoners lost their lives in riots in various Ecuadorian prisons.
Meanwhile the situation in Bellavista prison has been brought under control, according to Commander Fausto Salinas, who added that a security fence was built around the perimeter after the prisoners escaped.
More than 35,000 people are being held in the country’s overcrowded prisons.
Conservative President Guillermo Lasso has promised to reduce prison violence through the gang peace process and political and social reforms.
