At least four people were crushed to death in a university auditorium in Bolivia after a gas grenade was fired as the university’s student elections were being held.
The grenade with the chemical agent was dropped on a student-filled sports hall in Bolivia on Monday, local police said, adding that at least 80 people had been injured.
Rector Pedro Lopez said the students had gathered outside the Thomas Frias Autonomous university building in the southern city of Potosi, to elect their representatives to the local university federation.
But the gathering quickly degenerated into chaos when someone fired an object from which a chemical smoke was emitted, presumably tear gas that caused panic among those present.
Videos and photos posted from the event showed people trying to get away and then caring for their fellow students who had been left lying on the ground.
Police said the suspect, a university student, had been arrested but did not disclose his identity or motives.
President Luis Alberto Arce Catacora expressed his condolences to the victims.
