Indian rapid intervention teams are racing against time to rescue a 10-year-old with hearing and speech problems, who has been trapped in a well of four days already.
Rahul Sahu fell into a 24-meter-long narrow well on Friday as he played in his backyard in the central state of Chhattisgarh.
Cranes were sent to the area to dig the ground with the intention of opening a tunnel near the well. Efforts to rescue the baby have been joined by military troops and members of the disaster response agency.
But bad weather and venomous snakes and scorpions that have surfaced after the excavations are hampering rescue efforts, local officials said.
Sahu has responded well so far and a camera is monitoring his condition and movements, district police chief Janjgir Agraëal told AFP by telephone from the scene. But the fact that the boy can not hear and speak, turns this into a very big challenge for us, he added.
An oxygen tube is feeding the 10-year-old with fresh air, and authorities are very hopeful that he will be able to get out alive. Uncovered wells are a common feature of Indian villages, which makes them often involved in fatal accidents involving young children.
