At least three people have been killed and about 50 injured as a passenger train derailed in Missouri last night, U.S. officials said.
Missouri traffic police patrols said two of the dead were on board the train and one was in the garbage truck with which it collided on the tracks.
They added that the tragic accident took place at an uncontrolled intersection – with no traffic lights or moving gates – where a gravel road ran between rails southwest of the city.
The Amtrak train collided with a truck near the town of Mendon, causing eight carriages to derail and overturn.
Amtrak said the train was carrying 243 passengers and 12 staff members at the time of the accident.
A school near the crash site was turned into a victim treatment center, officials said.
Robert Nightingale, a passenger with a sleeping ticket, said he was more sleepy when he heard the noise.
“Everything happened as if it were a slow turnaround. “It started shaking, shaking and then tilting while my window was on the ground,” Nightingale told CNN.
Nightingale said she escaped unharmed but could not get out of the window as she was trapped by the ground.
When he managed to get out he said there were many crashed wagons while the truck they had collided with had turned into an iron stack.
This is the second deadly iron clash in two days in the US.
On Sunday 3 people died after a rural train in California collided with a vehicle on rails. Authorities said all the victims were in the vehicle on the ground.
