An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck western Afghanistan today, leaving more than 26 people dead and destroying hundreds of homes.
The quake affected the western province of Badghis, which borders Turkmenistan, and destroyed brick houses.
““Unfortunately, the first figures show that 22 people were killed, including women and children, and four were injured.”, said Baz Mohammad Sarwari, director of the Center for Information and Culture in Badghis, adding that the death toll could be even higher.
Mula Janan Saeqe from the Ministry of Emergency Situations confirmed the number of victims and said 700 houses had been destroyed.
The quake was at a depth of 30 kilometers towards the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center.
