At least 26 people have been killed after being electrocuted by a cable that fell on a crowded market in the Democratic Republic of Congo, police said today.
Serious images posted on social networks showed the consequences of the disaster with some bodies not moving, lying in the pools of water that are constantly created in the market.
It is not yet clear what caused the cable to break.
In a statement the RD Congo power company said it believed a lightning strike could have hit the installations, causing them to collapse. The company sent condolences to the families of the victims.
Police said the tragedy occurred in the Matadi-Kibala area in Kinshasa and that many people had died on the spot.
Local media reported that most of those killed were women market workers.
“The cable broke and fell into a pool of water created by the morning rain,” local government spokesman Charles Mbutamuntu told AFP.
Mbutamuntu added that the bodies had been sent to the morgue and investigations into the serious incident are ongoing.
One trader said after the tragedy that the market is often flooded by rains and traders during their work have to move through water.
