Francesco Hekali, a 22-year-old farmer from Drenovica, Dimali, cultivated tomatoes in 4 dynym greenhouses, although the production turned out to be good, he managed to sell very little.
The lack of a market would force Francesco to dump all his agricultural produce into the canal.
“This greenhouse produced 300 quintals of tomatoes, I managed to sell only 35 quintals of tomatoes at the price of 500-600 old lek per kilogram. Is this a good price? No, absolutely, because I only get the seed 33 cents without including the price the nursery and plant care want. If we collect these costs go somewhere around 500 old lek. “In this greenhouse that you see in 4 dynym, I threw 15 million Lekë, and I received only 6 million Lekë”, he said.
Francesco says he is on the verge of bankruptcy. Before making the decision to give up farming permanently, the young farmer has tried his luck once again.
“I will plant this greenhouse here with the same tomato, it is 1 and a half dynym. Yes as you can see the plant now needs fertilizing and I have not seen it do the service. The price of chemical fertilizers has increased, a garbage bag of 80 thousand old lekë has gone, I have no money. “I left it like this in the hands of God, to see everything done”, said Francesco.
If the small tomatoes that Francesco has planted are not sold at the price that provides the 22-year-old farmer with a profit, he will leave Albania forever.
