The global charity Save the Children said today that soldiers had pulled people out of cars, arrested some, killed many others and burned their bodies.
Two members of its staff were among 35 people killed in an attack blamed on the Myanmar military.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm that two members of our staff were among at least 35 people, including women and children, who were killed on Friday, December 24, 2021, in an attack by the Myanmar army in Kayah province in the east of the country. Wrote in a statement ‘Save The Children’.
“The two deceased members of our staff were fathers and passionate about raising children, one 32 years old and the other 28 years old.”
They were returning to their jobs for the organization following a humanitarian response.
“The army pulled people out of cars, arrested some, killed many others and burned their bodies,” the statement added.
The head of the organization, Inger Ashing, was quoted as saying: “This is terrible news. Violence against innocent civilians and aid workers is intolerable. “This absurd attack is a violation of International Humanitarian Law.”
“We are shocked by the violence against civilians and our staff members, who are dedicated humanitarian aid workers and support millions of people and children across Myanmar,” Ashing added.
Save the Children has worked in Myanmar since 1995, with more than 50 partner groups and a staff of 900, but is now temporarily suspending operations in Kayin after the incident, the statement added. / Anadolu Agency /
