At least 19 people have been killed when a nightclub was set on fire during a mass brawl in Indonesia.
Rival youth gangs started attacking each other with knives, darts and Molotov cocktails at a karaoke club in Sorong, in the western province of Papua.
One of the victims was shot to death with a knife in the early hours of the morning before the fire started, which then trapped inside 18 people.
“Clashes between young people in cities are normal, but in this case many deaths were caused, it is the first time this happens,” police spokesman Adam Erwin told Metro TV.
Detectives are investigating whether the fire started accidentally or was intentional.
Footage from the scene showed the severe consequences of the fire that had engulfed the disco.
Sorong police chief Ary Nyoto Setiawan said the horrific clash between the gangs had started ‘just for a misunderstanding’.
“We called them and tried to mediate, but the fight continued until the early hours of the morning,” he added.
Police who arrived at the scene evacuated all those present but later firefighters found the bodies in the rooms inside the nightclub, local media reported.
