Prospectors in Angola have unearthed a rare clean diamond that could be the largest discovered in 300 years, mine operators said today.
The 170-carat diamond named ‘Lulo Rose’ — was discovered at the Lulo mine in Angola’s mineral-rich northeast, and is among the largest of its color ever found.
The “historic” discovery of the type IIa diamond, one of the purest forms of the natural stone, was welcomed by the local government which is a partner of the mine.
The Lulo concession mine is a 3,000-square-km area, about 600km from Angola’s capital, Luanda, and is also where Angola’s largest diamond was found: the 404-carat “February 4th Stone” in 2016.
Such diamonds have consistently broken price records, including the most expensive ever sold, the 59.6-meter Pink Star that sold in Hong Kong in 2017 for $71.2 million.
Lulo Rose must now be cut and polished, in the process the stone can lose about 50 percent of its weight. It will be sold in an international auction by the local state-owned company.
