British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has vowed to “continue” as Prime Minister despite the fact that 17 MPs have resigned from his government.
Asked by fellow Conservative Tom Loughton if there was “any circumstances in which he should resign“, Johnson said he would if “He felt it was impossible to continue” as the government, according to Sky News.
He added: The job of a prime minister in difficult circumstances when he has been given a colossal mandate is to carry on and that is what I will do.
The resignations began after No 10 admitted Johnson knew about the allegations against MP Chris Pincher.
Pincher resigned last week following allegations that he had hugged two men at a private club. He was subsequently suspended from the Conservative Party.
Former senior civil servant Lord McDonald said on Tuesday morning that Johnson had known about the allegations in 2019. He said the allegations were “Similar” with those of last week.
Less than 12 hours later, Rishi Sunak resigned as chancellor and Sajid Javid resigned as health secretary on Tuesday.
It prompted a flurry of government resignations as Tory MPs said they could no longer support a leader who had lied, plunging the prime minister into further crisis.
