A horrific head-on collision of a Toyota SUV with a 22-seater bus has left 17 people dead and 8 injured in South Africa.
The serious accident happened on the N1 highway in the northwestern province of Limpopo yesterday on January 11th.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Transport and the Community called for compliance with road safety rules after the driver of the Toyota lost control after the tire burst, which led to the terrible collision with the Mercedes Benz minibus.
A local police statement said: “The bus exploded in flames and 11 passengers were trapped inside, burning inside. The driver of the off-road vehicle was also killed on the spot. “Eight people survived the tragedy, six with serious injuries and two with minor injuries.”
The incident prompted officials to issue petitions to drivers to check the technical condition of their vehicles before long journeys on highways, as this was the most common cause of deaths and injuries on the road.
The South African daily ‘The Citizen’, said that the accident comes just a few days a similar tragedy on the same highway.
Six people including four children had died on New Year’s Eve when an off-road vehicle collided with a truck on the N1 motorway near Mokopane.
Emergency officers had found the 4 × 4 vehicle on one side of the road and the truck had overturned on the other side.
South Africa ranks 68th among 183 states for street deaths, according to 2018 statistics.
