Such are the 16 youngest citizens who received Albanian citizenship and swore before the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, for loyalty to the Albanian state and for respecting the Constitution and the legislation of the Republic of Albania.
During the swearing-in ceremony, Veliaj said that today it is very important to reflect on coexistence in the community.
While I will talk about the neighborhood for others, I will talk about you as fellow citizens, because now we share the same nationality, the same city, the same aspirations, and we are part of a mission called “Mission Albania”, to do this “a country, not only cosmopolitan, but also a European and modernized country,” he said.
Veliaj said that the times they are living in remind us how important good neighborliness is and its preservation. “It is enough to look at what is happening today with Russia’s aggression against Ukraine to understand that friends and neighbors should not be taken for granted. We always think that neighbors are always there, and there is no need to pay too much attention to them. But even if in the palace where we live if a neighbor makes noise, if it becomes violent, if it pollutes, it affects the whole neighborhood, the palace, even the value of your home. “Imagine having a neighbor who invades or hinders you, to turn into a gap between you and progress, between you and the future, between you and your dreams,” he said.
The mayor said that Albanians, as in the case of Jews during World War II, have always known how to support people in need. “For years we waited for a community of thousands of Afghan citizens, who first came to Tirana, then to several other places in Albania, who found salvation from what was happening in Afghanistan, until then they received the documents for the United States. I’m glad that Tirana and Albania have become a haven, especially for women and children coming from Ukraine – they are the weakest, the most powerless, the most innocent in this conflict. I am glad that as Albanians, we have an invisible thread of brotherhood, of an open door, of an open heart, of hospitality to those in need, of solidarity with what is going through a disaster, which is weaker than we at the moment “, declared Veliaj.
