A 13-year-old girl with an unknown muscular condition holding her head bent 90-degrees has undergone successful life-saving surgery by straightening her neck.
Afsheen Kumbar is believed to have suffered from a severe neck flexion disorder, known in the medical world as ‘torticolis’.
The problem had been appearing since she was eight months old after injuring her neck while playing outside.
From then on she could not keep her neck straight and Afsheen lived constantly in pain, with difficulty eating, going to the toilet and walking.
Afsheen’s plight forced her to drop out of school and spend her days alone staying at her home in Sindh, in Pakistanwith her mother Jameelan, 54, and older brother Mohammad Yaqoob Kumbar, 29.
But last week Afsheen underwent surgery at Agha Khan Karachi Hospital, Sindh which proved to be a huge success, and he is already recovering in intensive care.
Afsheen, one of the family’s six children, was born healthy but her life took a dramatic turn when she suffered the injury while playing outside.
Torticollis can be caused by sores on the spine or neck muscles.
Afsheen’s parents had initially sent her to a spiritual healer but to no avail and her condition was deteriorating.
Through small donations he was taken to Agha Khan Hospital where doctors agreed to operate on him giving him a 50 per cent chance of survival.
Despite the success of the Afsheen operation she will need other interventions to maintain the shape of her neck.
