At least 13 people have been killed in western Guatemala, including women, children and a police officer, in an old land dispute between indigenous villages.
Police said the confrontations had started since Friday and lasted until Saturday in the area about 160 kilometers away from the capital.
Twelve people were found dead in a village of Nahuala, where the territorial border with the indigenous population of Santa Catarina lies, national police said in a statement.
The deaths of a police officer were reported among the victims, which included children, men and women.
Two police officers were also injured in the nearly century-long conflict between two indigenous populations of ancient Mayan origin.
President Alejandro Giamattei in May had declared a state of emergency following the escalation of violence.
“The differences between them have lasted for 100 years and have taken the lives of many villagers involved in land protection,” Giammattei said at the time.
In attempts to resolve the conflict, the Minister of Defense increased the presence of the police to prevent conflicts.
“We condemn these inhuman and irrational acts,” police said after the recent events.
